In October 1992 a group of friends made up of Thierry Rouault, Jean-Michel Daniel, Brigitte Rohard and Jean-Bernard Emond decide to create an association which the goal would be to make the analysis of the electronic music. Why such an association? At the time there were only three fan clubs non French-speaking only dedicated to Jarre. The original idea was thus to create a magazine which would treat electronic music, synthesizers and shows. A short experiment entitled Cartolina had made it possible to provide the foundations of association. But Jean-Michel Jarre thought that the Cartolina newspaper did not carry a title representative of his music, it was thus necessary to find another name. Globe trotter seemed suitable, the music of the same title was very recent at the time. Moreover it was one of the great musical of Jarre, and then Globe-Trotter was also a qualifier rather close to the personalities of Jarre and Vangelis. The game was played!
The review Globe- Trotter was not the success awaited before 1994. II is necessary to pay homage to Alain Mangenot, head redactor of Keyboards, because it's him who promoted association G T to a larger public in issue 83 of his monthly magazine.
The fans of Jean-Michel Jarre and Vangelis were going thus to discover "the Globe-Trotter philosophy". What did consist it? When I was only after the departure of the first writers of association disappointed by the lack of members, I wanted almost to stop. But was necessary it to give up with the fan clubs the right to be the only ones to speak about Jarre... no of course! My idea was thus to create a new state of mind which would leave the free space to constructive criticism and would fight against caricatural subjectivity inherent to certain fan clubs.
In Globe- Trotter the artists would be regarded as human beings and not gods. Their errors would be evoked like their successes, with equal shares. Moreover the inspiration of the composers would be also analyzed in detail: masonic symbolic and political aspects of the Jarre work, and Greek folklore in the work of Vangelis for example. Because obviously the essence of Globe trotter would consist in establishing the difference between "promotion of the music" of Jarre/Vangelis and "promotion of Jarre/VangeIis". This last perception was already well too much present within the fan clubs. Globe- Trotter should thus be a Magazine open to all debates, exhaustive and heteroclite contrary to the traditional club partitioned in the polishing of the ivory statue, entirely enclosed in the fetishistic worship of an alive god. To be the broadest possible intellectual sample Globe trotter was to be that of the writers as well as that of the members, this is why of many articles were written by the subscribers.
It was also necessary to stop the idea of profit related to the fan clubs and try to understand what fans wanted to know, what they could seek well. Thus was born the idea to propose a magazine color at a cheap price and the free recording of the untraceable musics of the artists. The detailed analysis of Jarre works and VangeIis would be followed thus better. The sharing of my collection of discs seemed to me right, because in the current society we often notics selfishness. I thought that it was of my duty to show another way with the creation of an association with nonlucrative and philanthropic goal. Philanthropy, this word involves mistrust so much it was disparaged but I hope to have convinced the members who it was not simply a beautiful idea within Globe-Trotter.
Which was the audience of Globe Trotter ? In six years of existence (1992/1998) the review counted 113 members. The review continued to be sold on Internet four years after the end of association thus entering a hard copy of 2 000 specimens all confused issues.
The majority of the registered voters were students from 18 to 22 years, as impassioned by Jarre as by Vangelis the "portraits of fans" (presentation of the members in a curriculum vitae) contributed to bring closer the drafting WP of its members. Thanks to these portraits each one could be presented and making association more human. Certain members had appreciated the meetings which were organized each first Sunday of the month with Beaubourg. These meetings made it possible the fans to make knowledge and to exchange ideas around their passion. The nail of these meetings was the presence of Michel Geiss who answered some questions put as well by the writers of G T by his members
What was reproached Globe- Trotter was especially the little of place granted to the topicality, but also criticisms with regard to their idols. From the beginning G-T wanted to be dissociated from the fan clubs by evoking the most ignored aspects and moments careers of Jarre and Vangelis. The photographs color stuck directly on the pages were not taste of everyone. They gave to the review a character amateur.
But for the major part of the members these photographs brought a key of originality and for Keyboards Globe trotter "was a collector magazine " designed "with poetry". Keyboards will have spoken much besides about our association in its heading "Fax" but also in two true articles published in numbers 90 and 109.
Finally in the chapter of the reproaches made with association, recurring will have been this one: "you always heat on the Jarre head" However on the 1000 pages of articles published by Globe Trotter only, about thirty could contain really hard remarks. The articles "the assessment of Europe in concert", "Concert for the Tolerance", "Oxygene 7-13 by Dimitri Pruneta", "the fanzines", "Odyssey through 02", "Zermatt," Lost cities "," electronic night "and" Jarre, politically correct by Sebastien Reinier "would not owe made up the only traces of Globe trotter for the major part of the fans because they were not representative of the remainder of the review. Last nine severe articles cannot make forget the 133 others! One would not have to forget the analyses of Aor, Deserted Palace, the Cage, the unfinished projects, Triangle, the masonic symbolic system in the work of Jarre, Pop-Corn, Initiation with the music of Vangelis... And even for criticisms most severe one strand of humour helped to accept a contrary opinion with his as it was the case for the article "Odyssey through 02".
